Getting Settled in KwaZulu-Natal

We are back in South Africa and getting settled in KwaZulu-Natal. I am so grateful to be serving as a Volunteer in Mission for The Episcopal Church and I am thrilled about this new year and the new opportunities for ministry that it will bring.

This past week has been about getting things in place.  Here is a quick list and some of the blessings already received.

  1. New Church Home: Anglican Church of the Ascension in Hilton. Turns out one of the assistants is someone who graduated from COT last year.  What a great surprise when we showed up and saw Nobuthle serving at the altar!
  2. New digs in the Hilton/Howick area: A cottage owned by the son of a retired Anglican priest! His dad attended St. Paul’s College in Grahamstown which has now merged into COT.
  3. New Visiting Academics at UKZN: Working on three book projects: 1) Saving Words, 2) South African Reflections on Anglican Worship, and 3) Anglican Approaches to Religious Pluralism.
  4. New Trip: Going to Tanzania in November to learn about theological education.
  5. New Contact with the Dean of Studies about Theological Education in the Anglican Diocese of Natal. A former faculty member at COT.
  6. Newly Purchased Wild Card so we can enter Midmar Nature Reserve and run: 10 minutes away and relatively flat!
  7. New gym membership in Hilton on the way to UKZN: No excuse not to work out!
  8. New Car: A tiny rental that feels like I’m driving a roller skate.
  9. New Local Airport: Resembles the Fisher Price Airports of my youth.
  10. New colleagues: New relationships and friendships already forming!

Things to do:

  1. Get library card
  2. Join local running club
  3. Plan trips to Botswana and Kenya to learn about theological education
  4. Find local doctor who will put the parts back in place when they inevitably fall apart.
  5. Train for and run a marathon in South Africa! Okay, maybe a half-marathon.

Blessed indeed!

  2. Blessings to you dear Amy and Joe . We are so happy to know where you are and what you will be doing. It all sounds just right for you . I know where ever you are you will be greatly loved and students and friends will be grateful for their time with you and they will grow in a deeper love of Jesus and a deeper understanding of living as faithful people ,as Gods children ,and conduits of the loving kindness of Jesus. We saw pictures or you running in London and now you are running in South Africa. The Lord bless and keep you beloved ones to so many who love you. Jim and Deede
