Round Two

Today Joe got his second dose of the vaccine against hepatitis A and hepatitis B (I got mine a few years ago for a trip to India).  Once again the helpful staff at Passport Health made it as easy as possible.  Two down, one to go.

We learned that the word vaccine comes from vaccinia, the name for the cowpox virus.  The first vaccine is often credited to Dr. Edward Jenner who noticed that milkmaids infected with cowpox did not develop smallpox.  In 1796, he administered the first vaccine against smallpox to James Phipps, an 8 year-old boy, who never got smallpox, despite being exposed to it many times after receiving the vaccine.

An interesting timeline of the history of vaccines can be found at historyofvaccines.org by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
